US UPDATE

Hi Folks,

Finally the weather is warming up here in Boulder and its great, I can’t believe that it was snowing about 2 weeks ago, the outdoor pool opens up in a week which will be great and the general vibe around town is that SUMMER is here finally.
Last weekend Tim and I competed in a yocal road race.. yes you read it right.. YOCAL, it was in a place called Hugo which is a small little town full of completely nothing except open farmland, wind and maybe a few people with no teeth oh and the obligitary truck stop! Yeah ….The road race was a 125km loop, there was about 50 starters in the pro division amongst Tim, Lachlan Morton and myself. This was my second ever cycling road race so I wasn’t expecting big things as I was just hoping for a hard hit out on a Saturday. The first 40km of the race was into a headwind and the peleton cruised along about 25km/h, this was pretty easy until we FINALLY turned a corner into a screaming side wind.. this was when all hell broke loose and the whole peleton was scrambling all over the place trying to form echelons…during this time I was leaning into the wind at right angles trying to not get blown back to Boulder!
I managed to get in an echelon and we rolled along nicely for about 45minutes, I actually learned a lot about bike racing and positioning which I really enjoyed, I managed to finish in the second group a few minutes down on the bunch in front which contained Tim who finished in 6th and Lachlan who won it. It was a hard day in the saddle and a great training day, it was good to see young Lachlan Morton win the race on such a hard day. Tim and I have been training with Lach who rides for Garmin and he is a name to watch for the future.
Everything is going great here and have had a really good 3 weeks of training and my form is coming along nicely, I am racing a 70.3 in New Hampshire on the 6th of June and Boise on the 12th, after that I have Ironman Couer’dalene on the 27th of June which I am really looking forward to. Some more Aussies are making there way into town which is great, Tim Reed popped his head in the other day adding to our small but prestigious training group.
I will keep you updated in the next week with my progress, but Boulder is such a great place to train with awesome hikes, great running trails and an abundance of world class athletes to train with!

Knoxville….

Hi folks, well this should be a very quick race report as I abandoned the race about 5km into the bike ride due to hypothermia, I was not the only one who had this happen as the air temp was an extremely chilly 12 degrees. The race was held as part of the REV 3 series which contains a Half Ironman in June and a full ironman in Sept both of which I am taking part in. This race was an OD distance race with an amazing field which was stacked to the brim full of fast OD racers and the overall quality was very good to say the least. I knew I would have my work cut out for me with such names as Matt Reed, Bozzone, Lieto etc just to name a few.
The new wetsuit ruling which has just been implemented is designed to follow ITU rules so the water temp was about 68 degrees F making it a bit chilly, but the air temp was even colder at about 12 degrees C. This was the clincher for me as coming out of a non wetsuit cold swim into this air temp really got to me and I started shivering immensily as soon as I jumped on the bike. I knew things were not good at this point as I began to lose energy and I really just didn’t want to be there. I started to hit the back part of the course which was even more cold and that was it for me. It took me about 2 minutes to explain to an official what was wrong as I could hardly speak! With the new wetsuit ruling it really makes it hard on the pros as when the air temp is that low, and you are dealing with pro athletes with not a lot of body fat, this rule is supposed to be in line with ITU standards, which start later on the afternoon hence warmer conditions.
I am all good now though and am looking forward to clocking some good kms in Boulder before a block of racing in June. I am building up for ironman Couer d’Alene which I am really looking forward to so will keep you updated.

US Update

Hi Folks,

I am now in Boulder after 3 weeks in San Diego and have settled in to the new apartment here which is great. I have a great view of the mountains and the clean fresh air is fantastic. My roommate Tim Berkel gets here next week which will be great to have someone to train with.

I have hit the road here in Boulder as the riding is great, big shoulders with bike lanes and cars that give YOU the right of way! I have attached some photos of my first ride here, I actually got caught in a blizzard at the top of the mountains. The temperature dropped to -5 and I started to get worried as I wasnt sure how far it was to get back into town….which was all downhill adding to the numbing pain! but hey that is riding in the Rockys, luckily lightweight wheels loaded me up with the best winter aessos garments to keep me warm.

My next race is the REV3 OD race in Knoxville, this is part of the series which has a half ironman in June and a full Ironman in September all with points adding to the series total.

My schedule has changed as I have decided to race Ironman Couer d’alene on June 27th which I am really looking forward to.

I have done some TV stuff with the www.finishline-multisport.com website so check it out.

I have added some photos of the trip so far and will keep you updated.
